Box truck crashes over hillside on Parkway East

PITTSBURGH — The driver of a tractor-trailer that crashed over a hillside on the Parkway East Wednesday morning walked away from the accident uninjured, officials said.

The crash was reported just after 8:30 a.m. in the outbound lanes of Interstate-376 East on the outbound side of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, according to emergency dispatchers.

Channel 11's Jennifer Tomazic (@JenniferTomazic) reported the driver came out of the tunnel and was blindsided by the sun. He then crashed into another truck, went over the guiderail and down a steep embankment.

Tomazic reported a bulldozer was needed to help remove the wreckage.

“I’ve never seen a crash like this before here,” Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Matthew Hudak said.

Hudak said he was the first person to the scene, and immediately tried to help the driver get out of the truck.

“Yeah, I pulled him out. There was not a scratch on him,” Hudak said. “I was quite surprised. He was in better shape than I was.”

The driver, whose name hasn’t been released, was not injured in the crash. The truck was carrying mail, but was not a U.S. Postal Service truck, Tomazic said.

State police are investigating.
