Brakes defective on pickup that plunged from overpass, police say

PITTSBURGH — The brakes of a pickup truck that plunged about 40 feet from an overpass to a Downtown street were defective, a Pittsburgh accident investigator said Wednesday.

Four people — three men in their early 20s and a 19-year-old woman — were injured on July 23 when the pickup plunged from the Crosstown Boulevard onto Second Avenue near the Allegheny County Jail.

The driver told investigators that the brakes failed and an investigation showed they are defective, said city police Sgt. Daniel Connolly of the accident investigations squad.

He said no further information will be released until accident investigators complete their investigation and review the findings with the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office to determine if there were any motor vehicle violations.
