Local police chief under investigation after serious car crash

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Target 11 has confirmed that a local police chief is under investigation after a serious car crash.

The Moon Township police chief told Channel 11's Rick Earle that his department has launched an investigation into an accident involving the Coraopolis police chief.

According to witnesses, Alan DeRusso was in an unmarked police car when he allegedly went through a red light at the intersection of Route 51 and Thorn Run Road Thursday morning.

Investigators said DeRusso’s vehicle slammed into a car driven by a 36-year-old woman who was on her way to work.

DeRusso and the woman remain hospitalized with injuries sustained in the crash. Officials said their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

According to investigators, there are conflicting reports about whether DeRusso had his lights and siren on.

Moon Township police told Earle they interviewed DeRusso and the woman on Tuesday. Once their investigation is completed, they’ll consult with the district attorney to see if any charges will be filed.
