Bridge inspections key to safety

PITTSBURGH — Inspection of the bridge which carries the Parkway East (I-376) over Sunset Drive will require single-lane closures into the early afternoon Tuesday.

The closures will occur between the Penn Hills (81) and Monroeville (84A) exits until and 2:30 p.m.

“Bridges are routinely inspected due to federal rules and regulations every two years,” said PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna.

According to Cessna, problems can be found during these kids of inspections, leading to a bridge being labeled as structurally deficient.

“We have 18 percent of our bridges are structurally deficient. But that doesn’t mean that all 18 percent of the bridges need to be replaced immediately,” Cessna said.

The bridge inspected Tuesday will not need to be immediately replaced, according to Cessna.

“There is deterioration, which if left unaddressed could cause a major structural issue down the road,” he said.
