Bus crashes into Whitehall home after driver has medical emergency

WHITEHALL, Pa. — A bus driver lost control of his vehicle Thursday morning and crashed into a Whitehall home.

Emergency officials said there were no students in the bus as the time of the accident on Fieldcrest Drive.

“I was eating breakfast and all of a sudden I heard a ‘woomp’,” Russell Gephart said. “There was a bus sitting on my steps. I thought, ‘Oh my God. I hope nobody is on that bus with a bunch of school kids.’”

Officials said just minutes before the crash the driver dropped off eight students at the Young Scholars Academy Charter School in Whitehall. All of the students are from South Park.

The driver, who is an employee of First Student, was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital. His condition was not immediately released.

Firefighters said looking at the path of the bus, it’s a miracle no one was hurt.

“It could have been a lot worse if people had been at the bus stop on Springvalley,” Whitehall Fire Department Chief Lee Price.

The bus also missed several houses and cars. Aside from Gephart’s porch railing and some potted plants, he said his home was not damaged.
