Woman accidently hits gas pedal, resulting accident destroys house

INDIANA COUNTY, Pa. — A woman accidently hit the accelerator instead of the brake of her car, which sheared off the gas meter of a Blairsville home, resulting in a fire that destroyed the house and the car, according to authorities.

The woman, who is in her 90s, was not injured, officials said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was backing out of a driveway along Evans Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. on Friday when the accident occurred, said fire Chief George Burkley.

“She lost control of her car, jumped the curb and hit the house,” Burkley said. “The car caught fire and then the flames spread to the house.”

The woman was able to get out of the vehicle.

Nobody was inside the single-family home when the accident occurred, the chief said.
