Elderly woman killed in Hill District fire

PITTSBURGH — An elderly woman was killed in a Hill District fire Wednesday.

The woman, in her 90s, was trapped inside her Shawnee Street home and didn't make it out, officials said.

While the woman was trapped inside, officials said flames spread to her sister's home next door.

"One home is completely destroyed.  The other one is heavily damaged," said Pittsburgh fire chief Darryl Jones.

Jones said the surviving sister was shopping when the fire started around 12:30 p.m.

Emergency workers had to contend with the freezing temperatures.  A bus was brought to the scene and set up as a warming station.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
