Giant Eagle ending Foodperks, expanding Fuelperks

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle supermarket chain is scrapping its food discount program but is expanding a related gasoline discount program.

Foodperks offered 1 percent discounts on food for every 10 gallons of gas customers bought at the chain's related GetGo convenience stores.

Chain officials say the program proved too complicated for many customers so the chain is expanding its Fuelperks program instead.

Fuelperks gives customers 10 cents off per gallon of gas at GetGo stores for every $50 worth of food customers buy.  Under the expanded program, GetGo customers will get 3 cents off per gallon even if they don't have any Fuelperks discounts accumulated.

The program requires customers to use a computerized Advantage Card.

Giant Eagle has more than 220 supermarkets and 175 GetGo stores in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland.
