HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A massive fire destroyed a Hempfield Township home early Thursday morning.

Firefighters said flames and smoke were seen shooting through the home on Mechling Road when they arrived around 1 a.m.

Fire Capt. Chad Snyder said it didn't take long for the entire house to be engulfed in flames.

One person living at the home was not there when the blaze was sparked, Snyder said.

It took several hours for firefighters to extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading to nearby buildings.

“I was surprised. My husband said it looked like the siding had melted, but it’s more than that,” neighbor Tracy Munden said.

So far, there is no word on what caused the blaze.
