PITTSBURGH - Couple arrested after officer finds children, 2, 4, home alone
Pittsburgh police said they arrested a mother who left two of her young children home alone Monday.
According to investigators, an officer from Zone 6 was on another call in Sheraden when he spotted a 4-year-old boy outside without jacket, all by himself.
Officers said when they went to the boy's home on Adon Street in Sheraden, they also found a toddler inside without an adult.
Investigators later arrested Chanel Branch, 30, and Quentain Deshawn, 23. Police said the couple is facing criminal charges in the case.
Police said Branch also has a 7-year-old, who was at school at the time.
Family members of Branch said they're surprised by the charges.
"This ain't normal at all," said Branch's uncle Brayon Branch. "I'm surprised she'd leave them in here by themselves like that. I'm shocked actually. It's crazy."
All three children were taken to UPMC Children's Hospital to be checked out. They are now in the custody of Children Youth and Families.
Investigators said that Branch told them she wasn't home because she was out in the neighborhood searching for her son. But police said Branch never called 911, even after they returned to her home hours later to find her.
Deshawn is not the children's father, Channel 11's Gordon Loesch reported, but he did live in the home.
Both Branch and Deshawn are in the Allegheny County Jail on endangering the welfare of children charges.
