FAYETTE COUNTY,Pa. - A 19-year-old man is facing several charges after police said he violently beat a 2-year-old he was babysitting.
Investigators said Joshua Tannous, 19, of Bentleyville, is facing aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person charges in connection with the Feb. 4 incident.
Police said Tannous beat the toddler so badly that he broke the child’s collarbone and scapula and left bruises and cuts all over the child’s head and face.
“He grabbed her, shook her, dropped her and slammed her down,” said John Hartman of Southwest Regional Police.
Officers said Tannous admitted to beating the child in response to the child crying. He also admitted to smoking marijuana and drinking whiskey before the assault.
"The injuries were consistent with the child being involved in a high speed automobile accident,” said Hartman.
The girl's father sent Channel 11 this message:
“We were unaware of him drinking with our kids. We want all young parents to learn from my wife's and my mistake on letting a young person watch their children. We are asking everyone to pray for us in the darkest days this family has ever seen.”
