All-terrain biker hit by freight train in McKees Rocks

PITTSBURGH — Investigators believe a man riding an all-terrain motorcycle near some railroad tracks in McKees Rocks might not have seen or heard the freight train that hit and killed him.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office has identified the victim as 48-year-old John Relja, of Elizabeth Township.

Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said it appears the biker didn't hear or heed the train's whistle before he tried to cross the tracks about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Relja's motorcycle and body were thrown from a ledge where the tracks run to the ground some 30 feet below.

CSX Railroad officials, city police and the medical examiner's office were investigating.
