PITTSBURGH - Police are looking for the person who stole a man’s child support money while at the Allegheny County Courthouse Friday.
The crime happened after a man went through a metal detector and left an envelope containing more than $600 on the conveyor belt.
The money was intended to be a child support payment, but ended up in the wrong hands after a guard at the courthouse announced he had found the money and gave it to another man who claimed it was his.
Allegheny County Sheriff William Mullen told Channel 11’s Cara Sapida that the owner of the money forgot the envelope during a commotion caused when scissors were found in a woman’s purse.
When the owner went back to retrieve the money, it was already gone.
Police are comparing images of the thief captured by courthouse cameras to mug shots of everyone who appeared in court that day.
