Man wanted by police wrecks after chase through several communities

IRWIN, Pa. — Police arrested a man wanted on an aggravated assault charge after a chase and crash early Tuesday morning in Westmoreland County.

Authorities said Irwin police attempted to pull over William Matthews just before 1 a.m. on Pennsylvania Avenue because he was flashing his high beams.

According to Irwin Borough Police Chief Roger Pivirotto, Matthews tried running into a North Huntingdon police officer’s cruiser during the chase.

After leading police on a chase through several communities, Matthews eventually wrecked behind the Hunker Fire Department.
