McCandless Township man saves elderly neighbor from burning home

McCANDLESS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Talk about a good neighbor! A McCandless Township man jumped into action when his neighbor's Wittmer Road home caught fire Thursday.

Robert Simmons rushed to help his elderly neighbor Matt Mehelic.

Matt Mehelic's son, who has the same name, said his father has limited mobility and was home alone when fire started on the second floor.

He held back tears as he talked to Channel 11's Pamela Osborne about the rescue and his gratitude.

"He basically dragged him out," said the son.

"His dad's health wasn't all that good, so I ran over to make sure we could get him out safely," said Simmons.

One of Mehelic's cats didn't make it out of the fire alive.

"We lost one.  I just found the other one.  Thank God one of them made it through," said the son.
