Mom accused of hitting 2-year-old son in grocery store faces judge

PITTSBURGH — A woman accused of hitting her 2-year-old son inside a Shop 'n Save faced a judge on Friday.

Police arrested Katy Watkins, 33, after they viewed store surveillance video from the store on Brownsville Road.

The DVD allegedly showed Watkins slapping her son while he was seated in a grocery cart.  Police said she also placed her hand on the child's mouth and pushed his head back three times,

Watkins was charged with simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The surveillance video wasn't played in court because Watkins agreed to take parenting classes.

The judge held the charges pending completion of the parenting classes.
