Mt. Washington's McArdle Roadway reopens

PITTSBURGH — McArdle Roadway in Pittsburgh's Mount Washington neighborhood reopened Monday after a landslide forced it to be closed for months.

All of the debris, nearly 100 tons, from the Jan. 9 landslide has been cleared out. City officials said the repairs cost nearly $700,000.

Drivers and pedestrians alike said they were pleased to finally see the road reopened.

"I can't tell you how happy I was actually to see it open this morning," said Ali Pertler.

"It's a very pleasant walk and I need my exercise and of course it just makes Mt. Washington easier to get to and to leave," said resident Norma Chase.

Residents of the city’s Arlington neighborhood have been voicing concern about where the debris was taken.

According to neighbors, crews have been hauling the debris to an old ravine non-stop.

Timothy and Carolyn Gathers said they’re concerned about what will happen when it rains.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen with the water,” Carolyn Gathers said. “Where is the water going to run? We don’t know if we’re going to have a landslide.”

“We just hope and pray that nothing happens that will destroy anyone’s property or hurt anyone,” Timothy Gathers said.
