Outbound Liberty Tunnel to close tonight for 16 days

PITTSBURGH — Beginning Friday night, the outbound Liberty Tunnel will shut down for the next 16 days while PennDOT crews complete a $19 million upgrade.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, the outbound tunnel will close until July 28. An estimated 45,000 people use the Liberty Tunnels on a daily basis – hence this closure will affect a lot of people.

Steve Cowan, with PennDOT, said crews will be painting the inside of the tunnel.

“At the end of 2013, crews began painting but there was a problem with surface preparation and the paint was peeling off so we went on a hiatus for the winter,” Cowan said.
