Peduto, UPMC meet on labor, other issues

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh's new mayor said he'll meet with the chief executive of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in hopes of mediating a dispute involving labor protesters pushing for higher blue-collar wages, as well as ongoing disputes involving the hospital network's nonprofit status and other issues.

Mayor Bill Peduto was set to meet with UPMC CEO Jeffrey Romoff on Wednesday after protesters organized by SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania rallied outside UPMC's headquarters on Monday and Tuesday.

UPMC spokesman Paul Wood said the health network is looking forward to the discussion because it has a stake in the success of the city and the region.

The city is currently suing UPMC, seeking to challenge its nonprofit status. But Peduto has acknowledged that's part of a larger push to get nonprofits like UPMC to contribute more for city services.
