The appeal to Allegheny County Court puts on hold last week's ruling that would let officers live within 25 miles of the City-County Building. The ruling means officers could live throughout the county and in parts of six neighboring counties.
Police union attorney Bryan Campbell said the police contract, which expires in December, includes language that lets the union challenge the residency requirement. He said some city officers want to live elsewhere because they don't want their children in city public schools, among other reasons.
Peduto said he's willing to negotiate the residency requirement, but has filed the appeal because he believes state law allows only him and City Council to change the rule.
