Sheriff: Armed man arrested outside mother's nursing home

BEAVER, Pa. — The Beaver County sheriff said that an armed man was arrested Thursday morning outside his mother’s nursing home facility.

According to the Beaver County Sheriff George David, the man was arrested outside Friendship Ridge in Beaver. A nurse reported that the man walked into the facility and said something referencing "killing" and then walked out.

“He said, ‘This is the day I kill,’” David said.

Deputies said when they arrived at the property, the man was found with a semi-automatic gun and a knife. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Officials identified the man as Larry Hicks. It was not immediately clear what charges he may face.

Authorities praised the nurse who reported the incident and said she prevented a possible tragedy.

“This is a facility with elderly people and disabled people in wheelchairs. They can’t move. We averted a tragedy here today,” David said.

Representatives from Friendship Ridge told Channel 11’s Amy Marcinkiewicz that they plan on making some security changes in light of the event.

Hicks was arrested outside Friendship Ridge in November after police said he threatened to shoot someone’s dog.

The charges of terroristic threats and simple assault were dismissed. He pleaded guilty to harassment, and police never released a motive in that case.
