Investigators: Computer system hacking at Nemacolin Woodlands affects thousands

NEMACOLIN, Pa. — Police said a computer system at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort was hacked and 40,000 credit cards used at the resort's restaurants and shops may have been compromised.

Officers said they do not believe anyone at the resort is to blame.

Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Stefanie Plume said the investigation is wide-spread.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort officials said they hired a private company to do an investigation.

“It appeared that the one thing in common with all of the different victims is that they had either been to Nemacolin Woodlands or they used their credit card online to go to the resort,” Plume said.

One of the many victims told Channel 11’s Cara Sapida that she realized her credit card number had been hacked after returning from a weekend getaway at the five-star resort.

“It was a new card and I had only used it twice. I thought it was a one-time thing that it got stolen,” the victim said.

Nemacolin’s general manager told Channel 11 News that the shops and restaurants were hacked, but the hotel itself was not.

Investigators said they believe the hackers are doing similar work around the country and possibly the world.
