Man charged with criminal homicide after telling police he shot victim in Butler City

BUTLER, Pa. — Police in Butler City arrested a man early Thursday morning after he said he shot another man in self-defense inside an apartment during an argument.

Authroties said Richard Neyman contacted police about 1:30 a.m. Thursday and said he just shot Craig Haas, 44, at his West New Castle Street apartment.

According to the criminal complaint, Haas “was in a rage” after arguing with two women, one of whom he had just broken up with, in his apartment just after 1 a.m. Neyman told police that he went to Haas’ apartment to look for his girlfriend, and Haas attacked him, at one point gouging his eyes.

Neyman said he pulled a gun from his left rear pocket, pushed Haas away and shot him in self-defense.

According to police, detectives went to the apartment and found Haas. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“He was a good guy. I love him. I just talked to him last night and now this morning he is gone,” Haas’ friend Kristen Herold said. “This was senseless and it didn’t have to happen. He was one of the good guys.”

Officers took Neyman, 35, into custody at a residence on Jefferson Street and charged him with criminal homicide.

Neyman remains in the Butler County Jail.
