Police: Irwin man charged after beating girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter with belt

IRWIN, Pa. — An Irwin man is facing several charges after police said he beat his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter with a belt Sunday night.

According to police, Marvin Stewart, 23, is accused of hitting his girlfriend’s daughter repeatedly with a leather belt.

Investigators said the beating was so intense that the girl had massive bruises and swelling. She was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital, but her condition has not been released.

Police said they thought they were dispatched to Katelyn Jones’ apartment for a domestic dispute between the couple, but they were wrong.

“It was further relayed to the officer that responded that a child was involved,” Irwin police Chief Joe Pocsatko said. “Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the child was beaten with a belt by the mother’s soon-to-be ex-boyfriend.”

Authorities said Stewart told them he was disciplining the child.

Officials at the Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau were called to assist with the investigation.

Police said more charges could be filed soon.
