AMBRIDGE, Pa. - Ambridge police arrested a woman for allegedly leaving her children home alone for hours.
Christine Szuchy is accused of leaving her two children, ages 5 and 2, alone at the Economy Village housing complex, where neighbors found them wandering around outside around 5 a.m., police said.
The children were alone at the apartment for as long as 10 hours, police said.
“The pilot light was out on the stove, there was a strong odor of gas at the time, and someone had moved the dryer over in front of the fridge, blocking the fridge. The conditions in the apartment were deplorable,” said Ambridge police Sgt. Brian Jameson.
Szuchy was found at her boyfriend’s apartment in the same complex. She told authorities that her sister was watching her kids, police said.
Christine Szuchy’s sister, Janet Szuchy, said she had no idea that the children were alone.
“I'd like to say, Christine, why did you do this to my nephews? I love you very much. You're my sister. I don't understand why you did this,” she told Channel 11’s Vince Sims.
Janet Szuchy has custody of the 2-year-old and is working to gain custody of the 5-year-old.
“She's a good mother. She's a good mother. I just don't know what happened,” she said.
