Presidents Day: Commanders in chief at the Olympics

SOCHI, Russia — Prior to 1984, no U.S. president had officially opened an Olympics held on U.S. soil until Ronald Reagan kicked off the Games of the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles.

In 2008, George W. Bush became the first U.S. president to attend an Olympic Games held in a foreign country, when he traveled to China for the Beijing Games.
