Spring snowstorm dumps several inches of snow throughout region

PITTSBURGH — A spring snowstorm dumped several inches of snow on most of the Channel 11 viewing area Sunday night into Monday morning -- causing a dangerous morning commute and prompting hundreds of delays and closings throughout the area.

The snow started to fall Sunday evening across extreme southwestern Pennsylvania before spreading throughout the region. Severe Weather Team meteorologist Kevin Benson said a grand total of 3 to 6 inches of snow fell in most areas.

However, warmer afternoon temperatures have allowed a lot of the snow on area roadways to begin to melt.

A winter storm warning will remain in effect until 8 p.m. for the mountain counties, where 6 to 10 inches of snow may accumulate.

However, winter weather does not end on Monday. Snow showers and flurries persist on and off into Wednesday with highs in the mid- to upper-30s.
