Steelers' Foote: NFL players need to 'grow up, mature' after Cowboys player's death

PITTSBURGH — Steelers linebacker Larry Foote said the tragic death of a Cowboys player over the weekend needs to serve as a wake-up call.

Jerry Brown died in a car crash early Saturday morning. His teammate, Josh Brent, has been charged in connection with the crash.

Brent was released from jail Sunday after posting a $500,000 bond on intoxication manslaughter charges.

Police said Brent was drunk and speeding when his car clipped a curb and flipped over, killing Brown.

The incident drew strong reaction from Foote, who spoke to Channel 11's Alby Oxenreiter on Sunday.

"From a spiritual standpoint, alcohol ain't nobody's friend," Foote said. "The last two weeks with two deaths in this league because of alcohol…, guys gotta grow up, mature. The wise man learns from the guy who made a mistake.  The stupid man learns from his own mistakes. No good comes from alcohol. Period."

The Steelers play the Cowboys on Sunday.
