Surveillance video captures violent fight inside Delmont bar

DELMONT, Pa. — A man is facing attempted homicide charges after police watched surveillance video of a violent bar fight in Westmoreland County.

Investigators said the fight was over a game of pool at Carney’s Corner Tavern in Delmont.

Tim Zufall, who owns the bar, said the game, which was illegally bet on, quickly got out of hand.

“They were betting on the pool table, which we don’t allow,” Zufall said. “The guy who was beating him kept kicking him in his head when he was defenseless on the ground. He kicked him in the head three different times, and then threw a pool stick on him. Then he walked out of the bar.”

According to police, Joseph Vangoethem shoved the victim and then punched him in the head, causing the man to fall into a table of customers. Detectives said surveillance video shows the entire incident.

Authorities said they caught Vangoethem, who recently got out of jail, nearby. He is from the Philadelphia area and just started hanging around the Delmont area, police said.

The victim, whose name and condition have not been released, was released from a hospital Thursday.
