Police are investigating the theft of $2,000 worth of road salt from a Washington County shopping plaza.

Authorities said someone got away with 20,000 tons of the ice-melting material from the parking lot at Washington Crown Center.

North Franklin Township police said they believe someone sneaked into the maintenance area and stole the entire road salt bin.

“I can understand maybe a truck load would come up missing, but 20 tons? That’s unbelievable," North Franklin Township resident David McGowan said.

Investigators said a red trailer was spotted in the parking lot that night, and authorities are looking at several possible suspects.

The mall replaced the missing salt with a new batch so it can keep the parking lot and sidewalks safe for holiday shoppers.

“What do you do with all that? Unless you use it at another facility,” Washington resident Steve Brezinski said.
