TRAFFIC ALERT: Inbound lanes of Liberty Tunnel closed

PITTSBURGH — The inbound lanes of the Liberty Tunnel closed Tuesday night, and are expected to remain closed until Aug. 22.

The closure is part of an ongoing painting project that forced the outbound lanes to close for a few weeks last month.

PennDOT officials said police officers will direct traffic in the area during the morning and afternoon rush hours. PennDOT also created two dedicated turning lanes for cars making a left from West Liberty Avenue onto the Route 51 ramp.

The posted detour takes motorists onto Route 51 toward Interstate 376 West. Drivers should take the Banksville Road exit, and bear left to get on I-376 East to travel through the Fort Pitt Tunnel.

As many as 45,000 drivers use the Liberty Tunnel daily.
