PITTSBURGH - Veteran who learned how to walk, talk again after being struck by car on bike honored with award
Air Force veteran and Munhall resident Kimberly Puryear was honored by the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association on Wednesday.
Puryear won the 2013 Comeback Award at the Duquesne Club.
In July of 2010, camp counselor Puryear was riding her bicycle to work when a driver struck her. Puryear suffered a shattered hip, shattered pelvis, broken eye socket, broken hands and wrists, and a concussion. After extensive surgeries and physical rehabilitation, Puryear learned to walk and talk again.
Because the driver was reportedly uninsured, Puryear was limited to the type of claims she could file, meaning she would have to pay out of her own pocket for the injuries she survived.
"When I heard Kim's story, I decided to help her free-of-charge because I knew dealing with an uninsured driver meant she wasn't going to receive the financial support she deserved to pay for all of the damages," said Puryear's attorney, Steve Barth, managing partner at Barth & Associates. "I feel fortunate to have worked with Kim. She is a strong woman and after learning how to talk, think, walk and live again after such a tragic accident shows how big her heart is."
The WPTLA plans to donate $1,000 to a charity of Puryear's choice.
"Kim didn't let the pain from her injury or the hassle of dealing with an uninsured driver stop her from living a normal life," said Charles F. Bowers III, president of the WPTLA. "We like to recognize innocent victims like Kim for our annual Comeback Awards because they exemplify characteristics that everyone can admire. As trial lawyers, we have seen many unfortunate things happen to people, but it helps to have role models that instill hope and perseverance in our clients."
