Mother shot, killed while sitting in car in Homewood; 2 others hurt

PITTSBURGH — Police said a woman who recently became a mother was shot and killed while she sat in a car in Homewood late Sunday night.

Investigators said the shooting happened about 11 p.m. on Monticello Street. Police said the motive for the shooting may have been robbery.

The medical examiner identified the woman as 31-year-old Rayanna Church, of Penn Hills.

Police said two cars were stopped on Monticello Street when someone began firing shots into both vehicles.

Investigators said one of the cars crashed in the 7300 block of Monticello. The driver was shot in the leg and was listed in stable condition, reported Channel 11's Brittny McGraw.

Officers said they found the second car crashed in the 7100 block of Monticello Street where Church was found.

Police said they found the third victim, a 34-year-old man, on the street outside of the car. He is listed in critical condition.

So far, no arrests have been made. Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to contact police.

Neighbors told Channel 11’s Brandon Hudson that Church was a quiet, but friendly woman.

“It’s very sad because she has a little baby,” a neighbor said. “I looked out the window and saw the flashlight, then saw the police car sitting there.”

Leigh Stubblefield owns a day care business not far from where the shootings took place and said some parents kept their children away Monday out of fear.

“I’m sad for the girl that got killed. I hurt for her family because I have two young daughters,” Stubblefield said. “They need to stop. They don’t know how to shoot. Just stop because we love all of you.”
