Man fires shot after security guard removes him from Homewood bar

PITTSBURGH — The owner of a Homewood bar is hoping police caught the man who opened fire outside his establishment early Wednesday morning after a security guard removed the man.

Galaxy Lounge owner Derrick Hemby spoke exclusively to Channel 11 News, coming to the defense of his seven-year-old business.

“We can't let a small handful of people dictate us not being able to appreciate a fine establishment like I am providing,” he said.

According to Hemby, a man and woman started arguing inside the bar, and a security guard escorted the man outside. Minutes later, the man came back.

“The guy came back in the lot and leaned out the window and fired a shot at her or at the security guard,” Hemby said.

No one was hurt, but the shooter got away.

Channel 11 News learned that since Oct. 29, 2015, police have received 18 calls for service to the Galaxy Lounge. Authorities said the establishment made the calls in an effort to be proactive and stop any altercations.

“From our meetings with Zone 5, they tell us we are doing a great job at the Galaxy,” Hemby said.

Hemby told Channel 11 News he’s hoping the incident Wednesday morning doesn’t hurt his business and wants the shooter caught.

Until then, he said he will continue to support the community he loves.

“The light is always shined brighter on a bar. We hire people. We provide jobs. We provide a lot of good things for the community,” he said.

Hemby said he has handed over security video to help the police investigation.
