Man sentenced to jail in hit-and-run that killed mother of 4

INDIANA COUNTY, Pa. — An Indiana County man was sentenced to jail Tuesday morning in the September hit-and-run death of a mother of four in Cherryhill Township.

Nicholas Patterson previously pleaded guilty to the accident that killed 45-year-old Leslie Bennett, who was walking along Route 553 when she was hit. %

It was not until more than a week after the accident that Patterson went to police and told them he may be responsible. He was later charged and pleaded guilty in March.

Patterson was sentenced Tuesday to nine months to two years in jail, followed by three years of probation. He was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.

"No one was there to represent my mom," said Alissa Bennett.

Tuesday, Bennett's two daughters were on the spot where their mother was hit, not knowing the man responsible for her death was being sentenced in a courtroom miles away.

The sisters learned of Patterson's sentencing via Facebook.

"We have no idea why they didn't notify us," Alissa Bennett said.
