Man turns himself in for shooting death of 19-year-old found in vacant lot

PITTSBURGH — A man turn himself in to police for the shooting death of a 19-year-old that was found in a vacant lot this past October in Homewood.

Floyd Beard, 18, of Homewood, was arrested Monday after he turned himself into police for the shooting death of John Davern of Carrick.

Investigators went to the 7100 block of Upland Street after a driver found the body. Homicide detectives and officials from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office were also at the scene.

Davern’s mother, Kelly Fields, said he was meeting a friend Friday evening, and said he would be back in a few minutes, but never returned home.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said it appeared that Davern was on foot when he was shot. Police said he had been shot at least four times.

Toler said investigators believe Davern was fatally shot around 11 p.m., based on Shot Spotter activity reported in the area that night.

Davern leaves behind loved ones, including his girlfriend who was five months pregnant with a boy at the time of his death.
