Mom facing attempted homicide charges for allegedly abusing 3-month-old

AMBRIDGE, Pa. — A young mother is behind bars charged with attempted homicide for allegedly abusing her 3 month old daughter, police said.

Ambridge police said Kayla Hummel, 21, kept changing her story regarding what happened to the girl.

The police chief told Channel 11’s Amy Marcinkiewicz that one of his officers was involved in a minor fender bender with Hummel on Monday. She had her daughter in the car. Paramedics check out everyone involved and determined that no one was injured.

Hummel showed up at a hospital emergency department on Tuesday, telling doctors that her daughter was in a car accident, police said. Doctors checked with police and determined that the child’s injuries were not from the minor accident.

According to the criminal complaint, the child had severe injuries including fractured ribs, a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. The complaint said Hummel told detectives six different stories about how her daughter was hurt.

Aside from the fender bender with police, investigators said Hummel also claimed that she slipped in the bathtub with the infant, the cat knocked a glass ashtray on the baby’s head and she dropped the baby while sleeping.

Police said Hummel’s boyfriend told them that she admitted to shaking the baby, then blacking out.
