Neighbors say Port Authority stop is noisy, dangerous

BRIGHTON HEIGHTS — Some people on Pittsburgh’s North Side are upset about a reestablished bus stop in their neighborhood.

The stop in front of Brighton Woods in Brighton Heights was removed six years ago. Last month, the Port Authority added it back during its quarterly route adjustment.

Buses now pass through the neighborhood 26 times on weekdays, 30 times on Saturdays and 28 times on Sundays.

“It kind of ruined the reason we moved back here,” said resident Matthew McCarty. “It’s that park feel. It’s quiet. Any more, (and) it seems like the east busway.”

In addition to the noise, McCarthy told Channel 11 he believes the buses are a danger to the children who use the nearby ball fields, playground and swimming pool.

The Port Authority told Channel 11 there’s more than enough demand on the route to warrant the change, but McCarthy disagrees.

“There’s no demand,” he said. "I’ve never seen anyone on it back here. Our board members have contacted the Port Authority numerous times, and no one seems to be doing anything about it.”

A Port Authority spokesperson said it typically takes a couple of months for ridership to pick up.

He also said the agency is taking the 24 complaints it has received seriously.
