New Castle sinkhole repairs scheduled to start Thursday

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Repairs are scheduled to start Thursday on a sinkhole that has plagued a New Castle street for weeks.

Melrose Avenue in New Castle is about two block long, but residents said what’s hiding underneath a construction cone placed in the roadway has them worried.

“The road started cracking, then crumbling and then a sinkhole formed,” Alexis King said.

The sinkhole is nearly two feet deep, Channel 11’s Amy Marcinkiewicz reported.

“This is ridiculous. It's been three weeks. All they put up was this cone on there. It's not safe,” King said.

New Castle Public Works Director Mike Rooney said the sinkhole has been there for about three weeks with a cone over it.

Rooney said he knows residents are worried, but he said it takes time to mark the area and set up a dig to fix the problem. He said a crew will repair the sinkhole Thursday morning.
