1 Year Construction Project Begins On East Liberty's Penn Circle

PITTSBURGH —

Construction began Monday on a one-year project in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh.

Crews will perform intersection, sidewalk and street pavement improvements along Penn Circle south and east between South Highland and Collins avenues.

The project will convert Penn Circle to two-way traffic operations, and create a main street-type environment to help accommodate a new Target store, scheduled to open next summer.

"It will be real convenient for me to come down here and shop for my kids and everything. I won't have to go way far out. So, I think it will be pretty good for around here," said Tara Bryant.

Other East Liberty residents like Samara McGraw don't think that reviving the business community in the area will solve all of the problems in East Liberty.

"Violence is still here and stuff needs to be patched up. Even if you do bring more stores in the area, it still doesn't help," said McGraw.

Work will result in lane restrictions throughout that area.

Some Port Authority bus stops will also be relocated.

Between 1996 and 2006 a Home Depot and Whole Foods moved into the area and Google recently opened up a Pittsburgh office in East Liberty.
