Two local bars have been shut down on the busiest day of the week -- Friday. Allegheny County Treasurer John Weinstein sent in his treasury agents to close them and seize their liquor licenses for not paying the drink tax.
"Right now, we're going to post this notice as 'closed for noncompliance with the alcohol tax' with Allegheny County," said treasury agent Mike Lepore.
According to county drink tax records, VIP 11 Lounge here on Webster Avenue in the Hill District owes $46,000. Deputies and county treasury agents closed it down and locked it up.
An hour later, deputies hit Big Pat's bar in Sharpsburg.
Weinstein told Channel 11 the bar broke the law by not paying $38,000 in drink taxes.
"Bar owners cannot legally keep taxpayer money," said Weinstein.
Weinstein said he's consulting with District Attorney Stephen Zappala, working on a plan to charge bar owners who refuse to pay with criminal tax theft.
