BELLEVUE, Wash. —

Four people were injured Thursday evening after an escalator broke apart in Bellevue Square, said officials with the Bellevue Fire Department.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. at the Macy’s inside of the shopping mall.

Crews responded to the location within five minutes after the escalator broke.

The Kirkland Fire Department assisted Bellevue firefighters to help the four injured people.

A 30-year-old man suffered minor injuries, and two children and another adult were taken to Overlake Hospital to be checked out.

Firefighters disconnected the escalator’s power line and worked with Kemper Development Security to ensure the area remained safe.

Witnesses told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News the escalator came apart and the steps were stacking up on each other.

Officials said the escalator suffered a mechanical failure and it is unknown at this time what the cause was.
