Cell Phone Helps Count Calories Of Restaurant Foods

Sign Up For Program On Diet.com

PITTSBURGH —

Want to order that blueberry muffin at Starbucks but don't know how many calories it has?

Well now your cell phone has the answer.

The new text message program is called Nutrition On The Go and it lets you get nutritional information like calories, fat and carbs on your favorite restaurant foods.

Dieter Lauren Alfred said the program could be helpful.

"It's New Years resolution time, so with resolutions I’m trying to eat better, trying to eat healthy," said Alfred.

Here's how it works. Go to www.diet.com/mobile, type in a special number, the name of the restaurant and food. Then a text message comes back to you with the carbs, fat, calories -- all the nutritional info you want to know before you take a bite.

"We have 1,700 restaurants in the database right now and we're going for the top restaurant chains to start with," said Diet.com spokeswoman Meredith Oliver.

Alfred said when you are dieting knowing what's in your food right away is half the battle.

"You can easily talk yourself into eating something when you don't know how many calories it's got, but when you see it, it helps with the restrictions," said Alfred.
