Chrysler PT Cruiser

Impressions: It has already been a long and winding road for Chrysler's retro rod, but one that has been relatively free of stress given the constant updating the vehicle has received since its unveiling in fall of 2000 for the 2001 model year. That's one reason why more than one million PT Cruisers have been sold. This year is largely a carryover season, however, as the PT rests on the 2006 makeover where it received updated exterior styling, a new interior and enhanced performance for both the four-door hard top and two-door convertible models. The 2007 four-door lineup thus continues in base, Touring, Limited and GT models with the base engine continuing to be a 150-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder. A 180-horsepower light-pressure turbo four-cylinder is optional on Touring and Limited (automatic transmission only). The GT gets a spunky 230-horsepower turbocharger 2.4. The two-door convertible, available in base and GT, has a multi-layer power-operated canvas top with heated glass rear window and a "sport bar" that's not intended as a safety device but rather a place to put the audio-system speakers. It also cuts down on wind noise so that rear passengers can actually have a conversation with front passengers without a screaming match erupting. The PT convertible lacks trunk room, but you can fold and tumble the rear seat and access that space via a pass-through. As a carryover model, side-impact airbags, anti-lock brakes and air conditioning are still optional. No problem considering the low base price that does include power windows, keyless remote entry, CD player and a five-speed manual transmission. Base price: $14,900 (est.)
