Company Operating The Meadows Racetrack Files For Bankruptcy Protection

The company that operates the racetrack at The Meadows Casino & Racetrack in North Strabane Township has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The action will not affect racing at the venue, an official said Wednesday.

MEC Pennsylvania Racing filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this month in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of Delaware.

MEC Pennsylvania Racing's parent company, Magna Entertainment Corp., is the former owner of The Meadows. It filed for bankruptcy protection in April and is attempting to sell a number of racetracks it owns in the U.S.

In November 2005, MEC Racing sold The Meadows for $225 million to Las Vegas-based Millennium Gaming Inc. and a fund managed by Oaktree Capital Management LLC of Los Angeles. Millennium Gaming's Cannery Casino Resorts, which operates The Meadows, retained MEC Pennsylvania Racing to operate the harness racing track.
