Coroner: Teen Driver Was Drunk In Crash That Killed 3

GREENSBURG, Pa. —

The Westmoreland County coroner confirmed that a teen driver was drunk when he crashed his car in Salem Township last month, killing himself and two other teenagers.

The victims were identified as Michael Richard Simpson, 19, of Greensburg; Jordan Daniel Cobb, 19, of Export; and Carly Marie Kudray, 18, of Export.

On Thursday, the coroner said the driver, Simpson, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.14 percent. The legal limit for adults 21 and over is 0.08 percent.

Cobb had a blood-alcohol level of 0.127 percent and tested positive for marijuana, the coroner said. Kudray’s tests were negative. She wasn't drinking and had no drugs in her system, the coroner said.

According to police, Simpson was driving along Church Street when his car left the road, went over a slight embankment and slammed into a tree.

A third passenger, Chad Michael Vandergraft, 18, of Greensburg, was ejected from the car. He was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All four were graduates of Greensburg-Salem High School and had been coming from a party, police said. Simpson attended Penn State University and Cobb attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. State police said they are now looking in to where the teens got the alcohol.
