Could Action By Rendell Cause Tuition Hike At Pitt?

University of Pittsburgh chancellor Mark Nordenberg sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Education expressing concerns about recent action taken by Gov. Ed Rendell.

Pitt, Temple University, Penn State and Lincoln University have been known as state-related universities, but last week Rendell decided to classify the schools as non-public.

They were also removed from the state’s application for federal stimulus money, which was meant to help fund public higher education.

The schools expected to get $10 million each. This would have helped offset a proposed cut in funding from the state.

In his letter to the education secretary, Nordenberg said he announced a tuition freeze at four Pitt regional campuses because he was led to believe Pitt would be getting stimulus money.

In his letter Nordenberg said, “Of course, this new application changes everything dramatically.”
