Councilman Looks For New Laws Regarding Police

PITTSBURGH —

A public hearing was held on Wednesday night, about a Pittsburgh councilman's proposal regarding police conduct.

Councilman Rev. Ricky Burgess came up with the idea of the new legislation after hearing from Jordan Miles' CAPA classmates.

Miles recently had charges of resisting arrest dropped against him. He claims police unfairly beat him while chasing him down.

The proposed legislation includes mandates for video cameras and microphones in all police cars, immediate paid administrative leave for officers involved in questionable incidents and the formation of an accreditation task force.

Miles was at the hearing, and said, "I think it will really help with a lot of the problems that are neighborhoods are having. It will stop what I had to go through."

Fraternal Order of Police president Dan O'Hara talked about the legislation that requires video cameras in police cars, saying quote "The problem with the technology is the implementation. What good is the technology in the car if the event takes place behind the car or out of view?"

Miles' mother, Terez, also supports the legislation.

"It should not happen. This is 2010. When is this going to stop? So the legislation is a good thing. Personally, I wish it went even further," said Miles.
