Driver Dies In Route 66 Dump Truck Crash

SALEM TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

The driver of a dump truck that crashed on Route 66 in Salem Township Tuesday evening died a short time later at Excela Westmoreland Hospital.

Pennsylvania State Police said a blown tire caused James E. Dean, 68, of Verona to lose control of his vehicle and slam into a guide rail.

Investigators said the truck tumbled down a 60-foot embankment and came to rest on its side.

The accident happened at about 6 p.m. and backed up traffic in Hempfield Township.

Dean had to be extracted from the vehicle and was transported by helicopter to the hospital, where he died.

Police said a thorough inspection of the dump truck will be part of their investigation.
