Back To School At Channel 11 Morning News

PITTSBURGH —

For Channel 11 Morning News, back to school means more moms and dads need important information to start their days, and they need to get it quickly.

WPXI.com talked to the morning news crew about what will happen in the newsroom as school begins.

“Schedules are in an uproar when school is back in session,” said Channel 11 News Director Corrie Harding. “I know at my house, the first few days are about getting the kids up, getting them breakfast and out the door. That’s why we’ve designed our newscast to fit this busy time of the year.”

Channel 11 Morning News Meteorologist Mike LaPoint told WPXI.com that the forecast takes on a whole new meaning.

“Parents need to know about the weather when their children get on the bus, go outside for recess and when they get back off the bus. There is nothing worse for kids than running home from the bus stop in heavy rain because they didn't have an umbrella or raincoat. I should know, it happened to me a few times. Every morning I study our weather models very carefully so that I am giving our viewers accurate information,” said LaPoint.

The Channel 11 Morning News format gives viewers traffic and weather together every ten minutes. And speaking of traffic, why does traffic on the highways back up when school is back in session? We asked Channel 11 Traffic Reporter, Trisha Pittman.

“Drivers avoid the side roads because of bus traffic and that backs up the highway. That’s one theory anyway,” said Pittman.

Pittman wants viewers to know that Channel 11 has traffic cameras pointed at all of our highways and will keep you up to date on traffic tie-ups and delays no matter what the cause.

And, when it comes to delivering news that happened overnight and local news, Channel 11 Morning News has that covered too. The newsroom is a 24-hour operation. Before the Channel 11 News 11 at 11 crew leaves, the morning news crew arrives.

Channel 11 News anchors Bob Bruce and Jennifer Abney talk about the newsroom when they arrive at 4 a.m.

“It’s actually very busy,” Bruce said. “There may not be as many people in the newsroom as there are for the 5 p.m. news, but the people there are working hard. You can feel the buzz and energy grow as it gets closer to news time.”

Abney talked about the back to school emphasis at Channel 11 Morning News. “We know busy moms and dads rely on the morning news, and we know that they are counting on the information we provide. Bob and I are always looking at the news wires and internet sites. We are looking at Trisha’s traffic maps and Doppler Radar when we are on the air,” said Abney.

Bruce agrees. “We have to. Everyone in that newsroom and on our set has to be aware of what is happening right now, right then. Lives are busy, and we know that viewers may only have a few minutes to get up to date on news, traffic and weather.”

Channel 11 Morning News is committed to straightforward local news, traffic and weather together every 10 minutes every morning from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.

The Channel 11 morning news team wants to wish all students a safe and great new year of school.
